What is Saponification
Share
I decided to demystify some of the scary sounding names on the back of products so that you can make informed decisions about the skincare you buy. Here is some info when looking for a good soap 🧼
Anything that sounds remotely science based like sodium chloride can ring alarm bells when you’re trying to cut out synthetic ingredients and nasties, but in fact this is the proper name for salt. The same can be said for sodium cocoate, olivate and castorate as they also look complex. In fact they are derived from cocoa, olive and castor oil. They become an ‘ate’ by the process of saponification. 🧪
This is the soap making process that has been the basis of soap making for centuries. Without saponification you would just have a mixture of oils! So what is saponification? ❔
To put it simply it is the reaction from an alkali base (sodium hydroxide in this instance) with a fatty substance or oil. The base when mixed with water creates ‘lye’ and when the fats or oil are added, they blend together to make soap. Every soap on the market would have had to go through this process. 🥥
Not all soap is created equally and to ensure my skincare remains organic and vegan the fats and oils I use in my soap are plant based with no palm oil in sight. It is important to remember that not all plants are produced in a sustainable manner. 🌴
