5 Unnecessary Cosmetic Ingredients to Leave Behind in 2024

5 Unnecessary Cosmetic Ingredients to Leave Behind in 2024

As we (finally) bid farewell to January, it's time to reevaluate our beauty routines and say goodbye to unnecessary and potentially harmful ingredients.

At Obvs Skincare, we're committed to providing you with safe, clean alternatives.

Here are five common ingredients found in mainstream cosmetics that are best left in 2023:

1. Parabens

What are they? Preservatives commonly used in cosmetics.

Why are they problematic? Parabens, such as Methylparaben and Ethylparaben, are known endocrine disruptors, even at low levels. While UK regulators are reviewing their use, there are no immediate plans to ban them.

2. 4-Methylbenzylidene camphor (Enzacamene)

What is it? A UV filter in sunscreens.

Why is it problematic? This ingredient is toxic to the thyroid and has been banned in the EU, USA, and Japan due to its endocrine-disrupting properties. Despite this, it's still allowed in the UK.

3. Phthalates

What are they? Chemicals used to make plastics more flexible, also found in cosmetics as solvents for fragrances.

Why are they problematic? Phthalates are known endocrine disruptors linked to reproductive and developmental issues. Avoiding products with undisclosed "Fragrance" can reduce exposure.

4. Oxybenzone (Benzophenone-3)

What is it? A UV filter in sunscreens.

Why is it problematic? Classified as a possible human carcinogen and endocrine disruptor, oxybenzone is still used in cosmetics in the UK and EU, despite being banned in places like Hawaii due to its harmful effects on coral reefs.

5. Triclosan

What is it? A preservative used in cosmetics and oral care products.

Why is it problematic? Triclosan is under review for its potential as an endocrine disruptor, with studies showing negative effects on thyroid function.

Obvs skincare is the only skincare brand I trust- I am just impatient for them to make more products to cover all my needs! 😹 I am currently trying to find a good suncream and am dithering in making decision so a possible future blog post would be recommendations for products that you do not make (yet ha). Thanks for being such a fabulous company!
